Karaoke Machine Etiquette
It might not seem like it, but karaoke is governed by some pretty serious rules. It can be easy to lose sight of etiquette if you are familiar with common depictions of acne in TV and movies. But in a more realistic setting with real people, it’s not just about wild singing adventures surrounded by drunken strangers. As time goes on, karaoke is losing its label as being corny and unprofessional since there are many new karaoke rooms with fancy features that attract a clientele that is extremely interested in karaoke as a hobby. These people take karaoke seriously and if they expect the best of behaviour from people who share their stage. If you don’t want to get lost in the mix and find yourself on the outside looking in, here are some karaoke etiquette tips to make sure you fit in.
1. When you are a karaoke establishment you should always be on your best behaviour. So that means no bragging or trying to bully your way onto the stage. If you are known for being polite and humble, that can take you much farther than singing talent alone.
2. When someone is getting up to sing then make sure that you applaud for them and while they are singing don’t be rude by talking with friends or having your back turned to the stage. When they are finished, show them you appreciate their effort by giving a few supportive cheers and a pat on the back.
3. When you’re at a karaoke bar chances are that you’re going to drink. While there is nothing wrong with this, you must make sure never to get up on stage drunk. There is nothing fun about that and it shows a lack of respect for the audience.
4. In-house karaoke systems can be very expensive so you must treat the equipment delicately. Never lean against the display screen or use the karaoke machine as a drink table. If you are holding the karaoke microphone then grip it firmly but don’t fling it around by the cord or shout into it.
5. The karaoke DJ is probably the most important person in any karaoke room. They are the person who controls the music and decides who gets to sing. So always tips him when you can and don’t try to trick him by signing in under fake names so that you can get more chances to sing.
